Hong Kong – The Education Bureau (EDB) recently hosted a significant event focused on value education within STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education. The School-based Support Services (SBPS) Value Education Sharing session brought together educators and experts to discuss and share insights on integrating value education into STEAM curricula.
Among the participants was the HKU eLearning Development Laboratory, a key player in the Quality Education Fund Thematic Networks - Tertiary Institutes (QTN-T) program organized by the EDB. Since 2019, the HKU eLearning Development Laboratory has been providing annual school-based support in cross-disciplinary STEAM curriculum planning, contributing significantly to the advancement of quality education in Hong Kong.
During the sharing session, Dr. Wilton Fok and Ms. Alice Ma, representatives from HKU eLearning Development Laboratory, highlighted their efforts and achievements in embedding value education within STEAM education. They emphasized the importance of cultivating ethical values, critical thinking, and creativity in students through an integrated STEAM curriculum. The session showcased how value education can be effectively woven into STEAM disciplines with organic integration and natural connection in school vertical curriculum, enhancing students' holistic development and national identity.
The HKU team shared successful initiatives and projects, illustrating how value education principles have been incorporated into their STEAM programs. They discussed collaborative efforts with schools in designing and implementing cross-disciplinary projects that not only focus on technical knowledge but also foster moral and ethical understanding among students.
The event provided a platform for educators and stakeholders to exchange ideas, best practices, and strategies for promoting value education in STEAM. The EDB's commitment to enhancing value education through initiatives like the QTN-T program underscores the importance of a comprehensive approach to education, aiming to create a more well-rounded and socially responsible generation of learners.
