The Prize-presentation Ceremony of the “Engage in reading to ring in National Day”— Junior Secondary History e-Reading Award Scheme 2024

The Prize-presentation Ceremony of the “Engage in reading to ring in National Day”— Junior Secondary History e-Reading Award Scheme 2024 aims to recognise students who participated in the Award Scheme and thank schools for their support. The Award Scheme was held from April to August 2024, which was jointly organised by Personal, Social and Humanities Education (PSHE) Section, Curriculum Development Institute (CDI), Education Bureau (EDB) and The e-Learning Development Laboratory, The University of Hong Kong, with The History e-Learning Schools Network as co-organiser. The aims of the Scheme are:

-to encourage students to learn history through reading, and create a favourable reading atmosphere and culture in school; and

- to arouse students’ interest in learning history, encourage them to engage in self-directed learning through the e-platform, so as to explore historical knowledge and develop positive values and attitudes.

To ring in the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), the Award Scheme this year specially selects historical articles relevant to the celebration of the founding of the PRC, and sets up two distinctive prizes, namely the “Blessing Designs Award in Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC” and “Special Prize in Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC”, so as to enable students to understand how people celebrated National Day in different times, and nurture their sense of belonging to our country and enhance their national identity through reading. After assessment, 4 student teams receive the “Special Prize in Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC”. Besides, from more than 12,400 blessing designs submitted, 6 blessing designs receive the “Blessing Designs Award in Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC”. Among them, 1 blessing design will receive “The Most Touching Blessing Design” at the Ceremony.

A total of 165 schools with over 29,000 students participated in the Award Scheme. After assessment, 22 students with excellent performance receive a “Merit Award” (including a certificate, a trophy and a book coupon). The newly-added “STEAM Award” encourages students to integrate History learning with STEAM and demonstrate positive values and attitudes. 4 student teams receive this Award (including a certificate, a trophy and a book coupon). In addition, the existing “Creativity Award” encourages students to use different ways other than writing to illustrate positive value(s) shown by the historical figures and events from articles. 11 student teams receive this Award (including a certificate, a trophy and a book coupon). Meanwhile, the “Academic Award” enables students to conduct project learning relevant to the topic of articles. At last, 4 student teams receive this Award (including a certificate, a trophy and a book coupon). Besides, about 5,400 students performed satisfactorily receive the “Appreciation Award”, and more than 10,900 students obtain the “Certificate of Participation” for encouragement.

EDB would like to express our gratitude to students, and their schools and teachers for the participation in the Scheme. We hope that our concerted effort would further promote the development of History, continue enriching students’ experience in history learning and nurturing their positive values and attitudes.
