March 25, 2025 —To promote the advancement of Information Literacy (IL) education across Hong Kong’s school system, a series of professional development courses were recently held for primary, secondary, and special school teachers. These advanced-level training sessions aimed to equip educators with essential knowledge and skills to plan, implement, and evaluate school-based IL curricula using a whole-school approach. The initiative aligns with the “Information Literacy for Hong Kong Students” Learning Framework (2024), emphasizing ethical, responsible, and effective use of information and technology.
For primary school educators, the courses focused on integrating IL into general studies and humanities, designing age-appropriate activities that foster students’ critical thinking, digital ethics, and awareness of online risks such as cyberbullying and internet addiction. Teachers also explored strategies to help students evaluate information, identify fake news, and protect personal privacy. Another key component addressed the ethical use of emerging technologies like AI and IoT, encouraging students to understand both the benefits and potential challenges of these innovations.
Secondary school teachers received targeted training on embedding IL into subjects such as citizenship, economics and society, and citizenship and social development. The importance of guiding students through complex issues including AI bias, academic integrity, and digital responsibility was highlighted. Participants also learned to leverage support services and community resources to enrich IL education in their schools.
This comprehensive program reflects a growing commitment to cultivating digitally literate, ethically aware, and future-ready learners across all levels of education.
