July, 2025 — In July 2025, the E-Learning Development Laboratory of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) hosted a cutting-edge STEAM summer course titled “Metaverse and Virtual Reality in Modern Technology,” designed specifically for junior secondary students (Form 1 to Form 3). The program attracted hundreds of participants from diverse countries, offering them a unique opportunity to explore the future of immersive technology while experiencing university-level education.
Throughout the week-long course, students engaged with advanced platforms such as Delightex, Sanebox Game Maker, Buildbox, and Voxedit to create their own virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and metaverse environments. The curriculum emphasized practical application, guiding students to build development environments, design 3D objects, generate NFTs, and write programming logic for interactive scenes. These creations were not just technical exercises—they were applied to real-world contexts including education, scientific visualization, and urban planning.
By the end of the course, each student successfully developed a VR-integrated scene, showcasing their creativity and technical growth. The hands-on experience empowered students to understand the potential of immersive technologies and their role in shaping modern society. HKU’s initiative not only sparked curiosity in emerging fields but also laid a strong foundation for future innovators in the digital age.
