April, 2025 — To support the advancement of STEAM education in primary schools, the Education Bureau and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) recently co-organized a professional training workshop focused on enhancing teachers’ understanding of mathematics as a core component of STEAM learning. The workshop, titled “Mathematical Competency in Primary STEAM Education,” aimed to deepen educators’ ability to meaningfully integrate mathematical concepts into interdisciplinary teaching.
The program emphasized the pivotal role of mathematics in STEAM activities and provided practical strategies for blending math with science, technology, engineering, and the arts. Through a combination of expert-led lectures, collaborative group discussions, and hands-on activities, participants explored innovative approaches to designing engaging and educational STEAM lessons that highlight the relevance of mathematics in real-world contexts.
Teachers were encouraged to reflect on their current pedagogical practices and experiment with new methods that make math more accessible and inspiring for students. By the end of the workshop, participants had developed a stronger foundation in designing STEAM activities that not only reinforce mathematical thinking but also foster students’ problem-solving abilities, creativity, and interdisciplinary application skills.
This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing the professional capacity of primary educators and promoting a more holistic and integrated approach to STEAM education in Hong Kong’s schools.
