June 24, 2025 — The University of Hong Kong (HKU) e-Learning Lab has announced an exciting collaboration with leading AI company iFLYTEK to conduct research and development in cutting-edge language technologies. This partnership will focus on three key areas: Traditional Chinese Optical Character Recognition (OCR), Cantonese speech-to-text recognition, and the development of Putonghua teaching materials.

The collaboration aims to leverage HKU’s academic expertise and research capabilities alongside iFLYTEK’s state-of-the-art AI technologies to create innovative tools for language learning and communication. Traditional Chinese OCR technology will be a significant area of focus, addressing the challenge of accurately digitizing complex Chinese characters. This will enable more efficient document processing, preserving cultural heritage while enhancing accessibility to Traditional Chinese texts.

In addition, the project will develop advanced Cantonese speech-to-text recognition systems. Cantonese, being a tonal language with a unique syntax, presents significant challenges for AI recognition. By refining speech recognition accuracy, the partnership aims to enhance real-time transcription and communication tools, bringing greater convenience to Cantonese speakers and fostering inclusivity in multilingual environments.

The third pillar of the collaboration focuses on creating intelligent Putonghua teaching materials. By combining natural language processing and AI-driven adaptive learning technologies, the project will deliver personalized and interactive learning experiences designed to improve language acquisition. These tools will benefit students and professionals alike, supporting Hong Kong’s role as a bridge between the global and mainland Chinese markets.

This partnership not only highlights the e-Learning Lab’s commitment to advancing digital education but also underscores Hong Kong’s position as a hub for innovation and technology transfer. Together, HKU and iFLYTEK are set to redefine language learning and AI development, driving progress in education, communication, and beyond.
