Hong Kong – In 2019, the Quality Education Fund Thematic Networks - Tertiary Institutes (QTN-T) program was launched with the aim of enhancing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education through self-directed learning (SDL) strategies. Organized by the Education Bureau, this initiative seeks to empower educators and schools to foster innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among students.
The short-term objectives of the QTN-T program include developing teachers' capacity to adopt SDL as a strategy to promote STEAM education and supporting schools in building capacity and developing whole-school curricula with best practices for implementing STEAM education. This foundational support is designed to equip educators with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively integrate SDL into their teaching methods.
In the long term, the program aims to achieve several key outcomes for students. Firstly, it seeks to strengthen students' ability to integrate and apply knowledge and skills across different subject disciplines, thereby unleashing their innovation and nurturing their entrepreneurial spirit. By engaging in SDL, students are empowered to take charge of their learning, regardless of their diverse backgrounds and abilities.
The program also focuses on improving students' motivation for learning and enabling them to transfer skills and knowledge to new situations. Through SDL, students acquire the related knowledge and skills necessary to engage effectively in STEAM learning activities. This approach fosters students' creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for their future success.
Ultimately, the QTN-T program aims to nurture students' innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. By providing ongoing support to schools and teachers, the initiative helps create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that inspires students to explore and excel in STEAM disciplines.
As the QTN-T program continues to grow, it remains committed to enhancing the quality of education in Hong Kong. By equipping educators with the skills to implement SDL strategies and fostering a culture of innovation among students, the program contributes to the development of well-rounded individuals who are prepared to meet the challenges of the future.
