In July 2023, the HKU e-Learning Development Laboratory offered two STEAM summer courses for junior secondary school students. These courses, titled “Introduction and practice on Artificial Intelligent and Internet of Things” and “On-line Metaverse and Virtual Reality
Game Design and Programming,” attracted 165 students from various countries, providing them with a taste of university education, opportunities to make new friends, and inspiration for future learning.
In the “Introduction and practice on Artificial Intelligent and Internet of Things” course, students engaged in hands-on practice using online network service tools to train AI models for image, audio, and human posture classification. They learned the basics of AI and IoT, including programming microcontrollers for IoT applications, while also enhancing their presentation skills and entrepreneurial knowledge.
The “On-line Metaverse and Virtual Reality Game Design and Programming” course introduced students to cutting-edge technologies such as CoSpaces, Sanebox Game Maker, Roblox Studio, and Voxedit. They created their own virtual reality, augmented reality, and metaverse scenes, exploring their applications in education, science, and urban planning. Through practical experience, students learned to set up development environments, create NFTs and 3D objects, and write programming logic and game design. By the end of the week-long course, each student successfully developed an online 3D game incorporating virtual reality elements.
These summer courses provided students with a rare opportunity to delve deeply into the STEAM fields, expanding their knowledge and skills. By interacting with peers from diverse backgrounds, they not only experienced university education but also cultivated an international perspective and innovative thinking. These valuable experiences will help them achieve success in their future academic and professional endeavors.
